MOA Scholarships
The Maine Osteopathic Association offers four scholarships to entering and continuing students attending accredited and AOA approved colleges of osteopathic medicine. The deadline for applications for scholarship support is May 1st of each year. Scholarships are available only to Maine residents. Maine residence is defined as legal residence in the State of Maine for a minimum of three (3) years prior to first application for scholarship support (must provide proof). Residence in Maine for the sole purpose of post-secondary education is not considered evidence of Maine residence for the purposes of these scholarships. An applicant who is a graduate of a public or private secondary school in Maine is considered eligible regardless of whether or not the applicant has resided elsewhere in the interim between graduation and application. The Maine Osteopathic Association reserves the right to require evidence of legal residence and to interpret the residence status of any application in the spirit of the Association's intent to provide support to "Maine students". Scholarships Available The Maine Osteopathic Association Scholarship: One award of $1,000, applicants must be first year student who is a resident of Maine and able to present proof of enrollment at an approved osteopathic college. Students are eligible only if they can provide acceptable evidence of legal residence in the state of Maine for a period of not less than three years prior to their first application. Residence in Maine for the purpose of post-secondary education only is not considered evidence of Maine residency for this program. The Andrew M. Longley, Jr., D.O. Scholarship: One award of $1,000, applicants must be a Maine resident and show evidence of interest in practicing primary care in Maine. Students must be entering or attending the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Students are eligible only if they can provide acceptable evidence of legal residence in the state of Maine for a period of not less than three years prior to their first application. Residence in Maine for the purpose of post-secondary education only is not considered evidence of Maine residency for this program. The Maine Osteopathic Association Memorial Scholarship: One award of $1,000, applicants must be second, third or fourth year student, who is a resident of Maine, and able to present proof of enrollment at an approved osteopathic college. Students are eligible only if they can provide acceptable evidence of legal residence in the state of Maine for a period of not less than three years prior to their first application. Residence in Maine for the purpose of post-secondary education only is not considered evidence of Maine residency for this program. The Beale Family Memorial Scholarship: One award of $1,000 is made to a well qualified student in their second, third or fourth year of matriculation at an osteopathic college who evidence an interest in returning to Maine to practice or in teaching in an osteopathic college in New England. Students are eligible only if they can provide acceptable evidence of legal residence in the state of Maine for a period of not less than three years prior to first application. Residence in Maine for the purpose of post-secondary education only is not considered evidence of Maine residency for this program. Preference is given to applicants from the Bangor, Maine area (as determined by the Maine Osteopathic Association). Maine Access Loan Programs Maine legislation has established a program which provides for Maine residents to state-sponsored seats at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM). The same legislation also established a need-based loan program for students in the medical professions.
